Last week, birthday & zoo classes

Last week Tyler started on these Jan Brett online drawing lessons that I found out about from other homeschoolers. So he was in a drawing frenzy. He would watch the video to see what she was doing. Then he would watch the video again and draw with her. That meant I had to teach him how to pause and play a video because he couldn’t always draw as fast as she can. But he’s enjoying it and he’s a really good artist. I’m going to have to make sure he gets into some art classes after we move.

We also started the Go North! Project activities. The Go North! project info can be found at: http://www.polarhusky.com/ We read the Module 1 information and did the first activity for his grade level. It was about maps and how they’ve changed, which is something he’s interested in so it was all good.

On Sat, he made a butterfly box at the Home Depot Kids Clinic in the morning and learned how to be a animal trainer at the zoo in the afternoon.

Sun was his birthday. He turned 7. His requests for his birthday were cake with candles to blow out and to eat duck. We got chocolate fudge brownies and rice dream ice cream on Fri. so there was one taken care of. The duck was taken care of by going to an Asian restaurant for lunch. He had Peking duck and loves it. He opened presents in the morning and talked with family in the afternoon. In the evening he watched a 2 hour program on wildebeest on Animal Planet.

Yesterday he started his 3 day homeschool class at the zoo. This time it is Animals in Action. So yesterday he learned about locomotion on land – how they move, traveling patterns, migration, etc. He got to touch an armadillo and tortoise. Today he will learn about locomotion at sea – how they move, communication, navigation, different types of fins, etc. Tomorrow he will learn about locomotion on the fly – flying, flying without feathers or wings, raptors, etc. He loves these zoo classes. He usually doesn’t stop talking for about 3 hours after I pick him up about all he learned during the day.

Oh, last week he also started playing more games on the computer. I taught him how to find the games that are on the computer through the Start menu, how to get to the kids games from the library website and how to get to the free games from the Comcast website. He likes Solitaire and Mindsweeper from the computer, though he does better with Solitaire. I also had to teach him how to change the picture on the card deck because he wanted something different. On the Comcast games he like Zuma & QBs, but Zuma is his favorite. If he keeps this up he’s going to pass my computer knowledge quickly and here I was hoping I could hold him off until he reached the teen years.
